This article describes the ââ¬Å"big-pictureâ⬠trends of what consumers value and want from healthcare today. The authors (Coughlin, Wordham Johash, 2015) use the term ââ¬Å"consumerismâ⬠to describe how the market is shifting to expand consumers risk and involvement in paying for and making decisions about health care. Health consumerism encompasses a shift from a physician directed approach to a partnership model where patients make informed decisions (Health consumerism, 2012). Strategies that healthcare related industries should use to innovate and succeed in this changing environment are also discussed. Being able to more easily and accurately assess the value of products and services is desired by consumers. Costs for services and care very greatly with in a given area. This article presents a couple of tools for helping to do this. Health care consumers are desiring and using a more retail approach. According to Coughlin et al. (2015) consumers want ââ¬Å"convenience, service and supportâ⬠(p. 170). They are looking for lower fee options at facilities with longer hours and convenient locations. They may obtain some of these options at clinics located in retail stores. The authors tell of a hospital that uses a retail techniques to offer warranties for some surgical procedures. As consumers assume the risk for their spending they are attracted to options such as these. They are also expecting better service and better experiences. They are willing to try new options such as convenient care centers, telehealth, mhealth (use of mobile phones or mobile solutions for delivery of health services). Consumers are using social media for support, information and influence. They want to know what their out-of pocket costs will be. Price transparency is highly valued. They have unique expectations, behaviors and pref erences. They want convenience, high quality care and service that meets their expectations.
